What is Mental Health?
It's OK to ask this question, I didn't know for a long time either. Our society doesn't have a great tradition of paying attention to our mental health. We are increasingly aware of what we eat, what we (don't) drink, or how many times a week we exercise and at what heart rate range. Our soul, our mental health also deserves at least this much attention. It deserves to be cared for, to be examined closely, to be understood. It has needs, desires, failings, it may need help to regain or maintain its strength and balance.
What is mental health like? I imagine it makes the world a colorful place. When we can see the bright green, the azure blue, the flirtatious red, the cheerful sunny yellow. When everything is somehow okay. Or when it's not, we know that we will be able to make it ok again. When we can trust our own strength, and our decisions take us in the direction our inner compass points.
A mental health professional can help with this. To navigate the expected and unexpected crises brought by life, to face postponed decisions, to look in the mirror with sincere interest. It teaches us to identify feelings, to untangle threads of thoughts. To understand what actually hurts, why something won't let us rest, where that inexplicable bad feeling comes from. Mental health education and supporting sessions are good for this: to write our own definition of "mental health" and discover our inner resources that we can mobilize for it.
